The Game of Healthy Eating (by Judy Davie)

RULES OF PLAY

  • Eat when you are hungry
  • Don't over eat
  • Eat real food

It's pretty simple. But if you want to play a really good game, that is, to eat well, enjoy your food and get the most mileage from your meals you have to be mindful about what you eat. Just as you would select the players in any team game carefully, so too must you carefully select the foods you choose to eat.

In every team game, the players have a specific role, such as playing in defence or attack. In the game of healthy eating each food group has a role and can be defined in a similar way.

Vegetables and fruit play a defence role. They are low in energy and packed in nutrients so you can build a solid wall of defence against the threat of disease by eating large amounts without adding too many unwanted kilojoules.

Carbohydrates play the role of forwards. They provide energy to propel you through the day, and, well selected, will give you energy for hours in between meals. They fuel every organ in the body, including the brain and are absolutely critical for maintaining performance.

Proteins also play a forward role and provide us with structure, form and endurance. They help rebuild body cells, support growth and wound repair and provide satiety. Proteins give us our drive.

And never forget fats. What game can be played well without a strategy, a coach to help implement it, and, sitting on the sidelines, but always ready to play, a sports physio to pull the body back into shape after injury.  Fats do all that. Like the physio they work to reduce inflammation after injury, they feed the brain and are absolutely necessary in brain and mental development

Remember that saying all work and no play makes jack a dull boy? Life isn't only about working hard to achieve. It's about that AND having fun. At the end of any well-played game, we should all make time to celebrate with a few treats. When we eat well we play well and that done there's always room to enjoy some yummy extras every now and again.

Most of us don't know how to discern between the five star, star, good, reserve and liability players within each food group. In Star Foods you will find a detailed and comprehensive ranking of vegetable, fruit, carbohydrate, protein, fats, treats and drinks players to help you play the game of healthy life well.

It's a clean, easy to follow system and if practiced could change your life.
